Well that's Twitter's own fault.They could make a license term of API access to display ads. I'm sure developers would comply if threatened with loss of API access.

subscription is the only model that works for apps. Developers need recurring revenue to keep interested in maintaining and enhancing the app. There’s no support for paid upgrades. You can’t give a customer free access to the new version if they bought the old version.

A lot of software developers appear to be married to the auxiliary storage. They always talk in terms of tables, columns, keys, indexes...They don't seem to realize that a database is a snapshot of a cache of a log. The only meaningful auxiliary storage concept is the log.
