When is rolling your own not rolling your own auth (hybrid functionality)?[IT, other]

I am looking to use Cognito admin functionality i.e. user input is passed to my server then from there to Cognito via the AWS SDK. I will be using user pools, not identity pools - this is only for authentication, not authorisation.
My main reason for using 3rd party auth is to outsource the securing/storage of the password. ...
